Stoneware pottery production at Baan Phon Bok and Baan Don Klang villages in Nong Khai can trace its connections to ancient kilns in the area at least the past hundred year, and perhaps longer;about 400 years old. Archaeologists and scholars believe that the Tai-Lao speaking groups in Mekong area use this kind of pot for daily use as well as ritual. For daily use, pots have been used for storing food and water, particularly ferment fish (Pla Daek) which is a form of food preservation and give local cuisine a distinct flavour. For ritual, they might have been used for secondary burial practice since ancient time.

ข้อมูลด้านประวัติศาสตร์ชาติพันธุ์บ่งชี้ว่าการผลิตภาชนะดินเผาชนิดเนื้อแกร่งในเขตบ้านโพนบก และบ้านดอนกลาง ต.ชุมช้าง อ.โพนพิสัย จ.หนองคาย ในปัจจุบัน เชื่อมโยงได้กับการผลิตภาชนะดินเผาชนิดเนื้อแกร่งรุ่นโบราณซึ่งย้อนหลังไปได้อย่างน้อย ๑๐๐ ปีหรืออาจจะมากกว่านั้นในปัจจุบันนั้น เกลุ่มคนลาวผลิตขึ้นภาชนะดินเผาเพื่อสนองความต้องการใช้งานในชีวิตประจำวันในครัวเรือน เช่น การใช้เป็นบรรจุภัณฑ์ สำหรับการเก็บกัก หมัก ถนอม และบรรจุอาหาร อาทิ ปลาร้า เหล้า และน้ำ นอกจากนั้น หลักฐานทางโบราณคดีและข้อมูลทางประวัติศาสตร์ระบุด้วยว่า ภาชนะดินเผาชนิดเนื้อแกร่งเหล่านี้ มีบทบาทในเชิงพิธีกรรมด้วย
