The mask making is part of a festival in July, known as the grand merit making festival. Mask making begins around May. Traditionally, after the festival was over all the masks were disposed in the Mun river. Bad luck would be washed away by water. The Mun river flows into the Mekong. Today many tourists join the annual festival. Masks are no longer thrown away, but sold to tourists. Regarding to crafting, significant elements of masks are made of natural materials, likes top-head from bamboo basket of sticky rice cooking and face from coconut bark sheet. Colorful paints complete the masks at the end.

หน้ากากผีตาโขนเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของงานบุญผะเหวดในเดือนกรกฎาคม ทั้งนี้ ช่างจะเตรียมการตั้งแต่เดือนพฤษภาคม ภายหลังการประกอบขบวนแห่พระเวสสันดรเข้าเมือง ชาวบ้านจะทิ้งหน้ากากในแม่น้ำหมันเพื่อสะเดาเคราะห์ แต่ในปัจจุบัน หน้ากากกลับกลายเป็นสินค้าให้ขายกับนักท่องเที่ยว หน้ากากประดิษฐ์จากวัสดุวัสดุธรรมชาติ “หวดไม้ไผ่” ที่ใช้นึ่งข้าวเหนียวนำมาทำเป็นส่วนหัว ส่วนใบหน้าทำจากกาบมะพร้าว สีน้ำมันหลากสีสันจะแต่งแต้มให้หน้ากากมีเอกลักษณ์และความงาม
