Nang Pramotai, a form of shadow puppetry, in Isan has been influenced by shadow puppetry in the southern part of Thailand. Generally the troupe consists of puppeteers and musicians. Somehow the puppeteers would take turns to play the lute, Khaen, and small cymbal, while the troupe is performing.
Isan people have also adapted shadow puppetry to their regional culture, as reflected by regional names given to this form of performance (Nang Buktue, Nang Bukpoung – Bukkeaw). The localized form includes Mau Lam and local musical instruments, and it also uses Isan language in dialogues.The tradition can perform for every kind of ceremony such as the ceremony of ordaining Buddhist monks, merit of distributing rice, the new house celebration, funerals etc.

หนังประโมทัยได้รับอิทธิพลจากการแสดงหนังตะลุงภาคใต้ของไทย โดยทั่วไป คณะแสดงประกอบด้วยนายหนังและนักดนตรี แต่ในบางครั้ง นายหนังก็สามารถเป็นผู้เล่นดนตรีสลับกันไปได้เช่นกัน
คนอีสานได้ปรับหนังตะลุงให้เข้ากับวัฒนธรรมพื้นถิ่น ดังจะเห็นได้จากชื่อเรียกในภาษาอีสานว่า “หนังบักตื้อ” หรือ “หนังบักป่อง บักแก้ว” นอกจากนี้ ยังมีการใช้หมอลำ ดนตรีท้องถิ่นประกอบ และบทสนทนาที่เป็นภาษาอีสาน
ชาวบ้านจะจ้างคณะแสดงหนังประโมทัยในงานต่างๆ ตั้งแต่งานบวช งานทำบุญ งานขึ้นบ้านใหม่ และงานศพ
